“The Spirit of New Orleans”
CELEBRATING CULTURE & COLLABORATION THROUGH SKATING
“Growing up in New Orleans, I was surrounded by a rich history of culture and music. As a Mardi Gras Indian, I understood that this tradition was rich and powerful. When wearing a beautiful suit it comes with leadership, respect, and embodying the spirit of our people.
In 2013, when I first completed my suit, I felt something indescribable. I had spent countless hours handcrafting every detail, pouring my heart into every stitch. But it wasn't just about the suit itself! It was about the moment I stepped outside and saw my whole neighborhood waiting for me. The pride and joy on their faces as they celebrated my work was a feeling I'll never forget. It was the moment I realized that I wanted to share this beautiful art with others.
Years later, I found myself picking up a skateboard and cruising through the streets of New Orleans late at night. The sounds of jazz filled the air, and I stumbled upon a second-line band parading through the streets, after a wedding. The city was alive, full of energy and spirit. In that moment, I knew I had to find a way to bring these two passions to-gether: my love for Mardi Gras culture and the joy I find in skating.
That's when the idea for this capsule was born. I wanted to create something that celebrated New Orleans its history, and its people. The board represents the connection between my childhood culture, the pride of being a Mandi Gras Indian, and the freedom I find in skating down the same streets where my community celebrates. It's a tribute to the beauty! The way we come together as a city to dance, to sing, and to lift each other's spirits, no matter what life brings.
Skateboarding through the streets of New Orleans is more than just a hobby for me. It's a way to connect with my heritage and my community in a new, exciting way. Whether it's cruising through the French Quarter or catching a glimpse of a jazz band, New Orleans is so special. The board I created is a representation of that—a symbol of pride, tradition, and the unbreakable spirit of our city. So, when you ride this board, know that you're carrying a piece of New Orleans with you. You are a part of a tradition that celebrates life, music, culture, and community.”
